前言 | Preface

发条幻象

Clockwork Mirage

在当今消费社会中，中国传统文化已成为一种符号和一种影响当今消费社会的媒介。随处可见的成语接龙般的文字游戏和各种中国风的口号、视觉元素充斥在大街小巷，层出不穷并时刻影响着我们的感官。

In today’s consumer society, traditional Chinese culture has transformed into a cultural symbol and served as a medium that propels consumerism. Wordplays, slogans, visual elements that are associated with this cultural trend can be observed everywhere, as they constantly affect and stimulate our senses.

这一切都归功于超快节奏的经济发展，就像上了发条的玩具一样，简单粗暴的推动着它无厘头的快速前进。并且淡化了文化本身的意义，间接的成为了消费社会的帮凶。消费社会下的传统文化会不会像一场美丽的泡沫迅速膨胀又随之消散，成为一种幻象?

Against the rapid development of economy, this trend is like a wind-up toy that is propelled by basic and repetitive forces to move forward. The meaning embedded in traditional Chinese culture gradually disperses and indirectly becomes an accomplice to consumerism. Will our cultural traditions expand quickly like spectacular bubbles, then burst and evaporate, creating a cultural mirage?

另外一方面快餐式的传统文化应该有着当今快餐式的表达和理解，到底什么是传统文化，今天的传统文化在我们这一代里面该如何表达，而我该如何表达，用一句古话，“以其人之道还治其人之身”站在一个古代文人的情感和当代大众的视角去表达今天的传统文化，最合适不过，也是用这种方式去阐释今天的消费社会的形态和娱乐至死的态度，并揭示当今社会群体娱乐至死之后呆滞的状态。

What is traditional culture? How should this generation interpret and convey traditions? How should I as an artist express my idea? As an old Chinese saying goes: “Give one a taste of one’s own medicine.” Perhaps having the sentiment of an ancient literati while expressing traditional culture from the perspective of contemporary public is the most suitable way to deliver such message. Through the combination of these two vantage points, my work expounds the form of today’s consumer society and reveals both the “amusing ourselves to death” cultural attitude and the sluggish state of mind resulted from it.
